What Massage Therapy Is and Who It Suits

Massage therapy is the assessment and hands-on treatment of muscles, joints and the soft tissue around them. Your therapist uses targeted techniques to release tension, ease discomfort and help your body move more freely.

It's a good fit if you're carrying tightness through your neck and shoulders, dealing with back discomfort, getting frequent headaches, feeling wrung out by stress, or nursing soreness after training. It also works well as ongoing support when you want to keep your body feeling loose and looked after. Here in Burlington, we see people who sit at a desk all day, parents who never stop lifting, and weekend athletes who overdid it.

What a Massage Session Looks Like

A first visit runs a little longer so your therapist can understand your history and what you're feeling.

  1. 01

    Intake and goals

Your therapist reviews your health history, asks where you're feeling it and what makes it worse, and agrees on what the session will focus on.
  2. 02

    Assessment

A short movement and palpation check helps pinpoint the areas holding tension and confirm massage is the right approach.
  3. 03

    Treatment

You're draped for privacy, and only the area being worked on is uncovered. Your therapist checks in on pressure and comfort throughout.
  4. 04

    Home care

You may leave with a stretch or two, hydration advice, and a sense of how often to return based on what you came in with.

Is Massage Therapy Covered by Insurance

Massage therapy from a registered massage therapist is covered by many extended health benefit plans. Coverage varies by plan, so it's worth checking your limit and whether a physician's note is needed before you book.

You'll receive an official receipt with your therapist's name and registration number for any claim you submit. Our posted fees are available before you start, and we'll walk you through them so there are no surprises. If you were injured at work, WSIB rules are specific to Ontario, so ask us and we'll point you in the right direction.

Care Under One Roof

Why Book Massage Therapy Here

Our approach is personalized rather than one routine for everyone. Your therapist adapts pressure, technique and focus to what your body needs on the day, and reassesses as you progress.

Because we're a multidisciplinary clinic, massage can sit alongside other care when that makes sense, whether that's osteopathy for a stubborn restriction or support for poor posture that keeps feeding your neck tension. We're on Appleby Line in Burlington with free parking, and patients travel in from Oakville and Waterdown too.

Massage Therapy Questions, Answered

How often should I come in?

It depends on what you're dealing with. Ongoing tension or a specific issue may benefit from a few closer-together visits, while general upkeep might be every few weeks. Your therapist will suggest a rhythm and adjust it as you improve.

Do I need a referral to book?

No referral is needed to book massage therapy with us. Some insurance plans ask for a physician's note for reimbursement, so check your plan if you intend to claim.

What should I wear?

Wear whatever is comfortable to travel in. You'll undress to your comfort level for treatment and are draped with a sheet throughout, with only the area being worked on uncovered.

Will the massage be painful?

It shouldn't be. Your therapist works to your comfort and checks in on pressure as they go. Some areas may feel tender, but you can ask to ease off at any point.

Can I book massage alongside other treatment?

Yes. Because several practitioners work here, we can coordinate massage with other services in your care plan when it's helpful.
